Dear Dowell Family,

We are all going to love how Dowell will look and function when we are all done in August of 2015.  As you know, I had to move Meet the Teacher Night to Friday, August 22nd. The final pour of concrete for our new parking lot will not be done until Thursday and it will not be able to be driven on until the first day of school.  As a result, we are going to cancel and reschedule Meet the Teacher Night to Thursday, August 28th from 4:15-6:15.

School supply pickup is schedule for Thursday, August 21st from 1:00-5:00.  Students will be able to pick up their supplies and either take them home or place them in their lockers.  If any students are not able to come to supply pickup, we will get the supplies to them on the first day of school. Teachers will be working during this time, so I ask that you allow them to use this time to set up their plans for the upcoming school year.  Also,  all pre-ordered athletic and PE clothes will be given out during PE and athletic periods on the first day of school.

With HAC opening today, please know that we have done our very best to schedule students in as many of the courses they marked on their course request sheet.  There will be times when we will not be able to fulfill all requests.  If you require a change of schedule, please have your students fill out a Schedule Change Request Form on the first week of school.  As always, we will do our best to meet as many requests as we can.

Please make sure all students bring a current electric or gas bill for their proof of residency.  My excitement for our new school over shadows any hurdles we will certainly have to jump over.  All year, I ask for your patience and understanding.  I will make sure that student learning will not be negatively impacted by our construction project.

Vamos todos a estar muy argullosas de nuestra escuela cuando se termine la construcción.  Como usted sabe, tuve que mover el  Encuentran de Profesor al viernes, 22 de agosto. Dear Dowell Students and Parents, 
I hope that you and your family are having a great summer.  Here are my goals for the summer:

1. Create a master schedule to accommodate as many requests as possible.
2. Hire the best staff to meet the needs of our Dowell community.
3. Communicate timelines of our construction project.
4. Create a safe learning environment for all.

Front of School
If you have driven by Dowell in the last two weeks, you are probably wondering how in the world we will get this project done in time.  I have been reassured that the front driveway and front parking lot will be done in time for our Meet the Teacher Night.

Schedules Available on HAC
This year we have decided to offer our student schedules online beginning on 8/18/14.  Please make sure you make a copy of your child’s schedule to bring to Meet the Teacher night 8/22/14 from 3-5 p.m. 

Registration for Next Year
Families of returning students need to update their student's information online through the Home Access Center (HAC) between August 4th, and September 1st, 2014.  Before the registration period opens, you will receive an email containing your guardian HAC login id only, and instructions on registering/updating student information.  In order to best protect student confidential information, we will not include guardian passwords in the email notification, but you will be required to know your password to complete the online registration process. Please utilize the 'Forgot My Username or Password' link or contact Pat Gilchrist at [email protected]  to obtain your guardian HAC password.  Once you have completed all of the update information, you will submit electronically.  There are no forms to be printed & returned to school.  However, we will need your Proof of Residency sent with your child the first week of school. 

Meet the Teacher Night
We will have Meet the Teacher on Friday, August 22, for everyone from 3-5 p.m.  Due to construction at Dowell; this is different than all other middle schools. If you have a question or concern regarding your child’s schedule, please contact one of the counselors, Courtney Starnes (A-L), or Ray Adams (M-Z), at [email protected] or [email protected].  Students are welcome to find their classrooms during Meet the Teacher and make sure their lockers are working. Locker numbers and combinations will be printed on the student schedules.  If you need assistance with your locker, there will be a table upstairs and downstairs to help our students. If the locker is not working, please don’t panic!  We will get it fixed by the second day of school.  Lockers are the scariest part of middle school for sixth graders.  Going to Wal-Mart and getting a combination lock for your child to practice with before school starts could really help alleviate some fears. School supplies and athletic wear will be disbursed starting at 2:00 in the Main Gym.

On the first day of school, your child must also provide a COPY of your current (July) Proof of Residency (even returning students) to their History/Social Studies teacher.  Proof of residency includes a current (July) utility bill (gas, electricity, or water) with the parent or guardian’s name and address, a current contract or lease agreement on residence.  A phone bill or a driver’s license will not suffice as proof of residency. 

Athletic Gear Pick Up August 19th from 4-7 p.m.
You will only be able to park in the back of the school.

School Times
Our school hours are 8:45 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. Students should not arrive at school before 8:15 a.m., as our teachers are not on duty until that time. Also, please make sure your student has transportation at 3:45 p.m. when school is out, as there is no supervision after 4:15 p.m. We want all students to be safe and need your assistance in ensuring their safety.

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications
All students who were on the free and reduced program last year will automatically receive benefits from the same status as the previous school year.  This grace period lasts for 30 days, meaning that the drop date for students who do not have a 2014-15 application will no longer receive benefits.  To comply with the Civil Rights policy and guidelines in the National School Lunch Program, each student must receive an application.  Forms for the Free/Reduced Lunch Program will be available during the first week of school.

School Supplies and Band Instruments
Pre- purchased school supplies, pre-ordered athletic wear and band instruments will be disbursed from 2-5:00 on Meet the Teacher Night in the Main Gym.

Dress Code
Dowell Middle School administrators and teachers are committed to consistently implementing MISD’s Dress Code Policy. Here are a few reminders for you as you begin your back-to-school shopping:

No spaghetti straps or tank tops                                              Shorts must be finger tip length
No sagging pants                                                                     No over-sized clothing
No non-natural hair color

Backpacks and Gym Bags
Students may carry backpacks to and from class. Each classroom teacher will offer expectations for how backpacks will be managed in their classroom. Gym bags should be kept in the gym locker room lockers or in the academic lockers assigned to students.

Parking Lot
Students not riding buses should be dropped off in the front of the building beginning at 8:15 a.m. The back parking lot is for MISD buses only from 8:00-8:25 a.m. After 8:25, parents are welcome to use the back parking lot to drop students off.  Vehicles exiting from in front or back of the building will be directed to turn right only on to Ridge Road. Please be careful and watch for students walking in front of your car. As it gets closer to 8:45 a.m. the traffic increases, please try to arrive earlier for more convenience and a shorter wait. Remember also to be courteous to one another.

Durham Transportation Services
Durham Transit provides bus service for students who are eligible to ride a bus. You may call
Durham Transportation Services at 972-542-8316 regarding all questions related to bus services.

PTO
Membership is $35 that covers the annual membership dues and a “1 Check Fundraiser” for the PTO. The Dowell PTO is instrumental in supporting our campus and staff with luncheons, classroom grants and supplies, AVID incentives, 8th grade celebration, 6th grade socials, the annual PTO directory, snacks/drinks/prizes for tutoring programs and writing/math camps, staff celebrations and so much more. Thank you for your continued support of our PTO and their support of our school.

Textbooks
We are not issuing textbooks to every student for every subject, as the textbooks are used more as reference material for students.  However, please know that if you desire for your child to have a textbook for every class or for just particular classes, contact Pamela Coats at 469-302-6707 or email her at [email protected] and she will get your child what he/she needs.

Cell Phones
If you choose to allow your child to bring a cell phone to school, please make sure the phones remain secure throughout the school day. Technology is a vital part of the learning setting.  Please note that students will be using their phones and other devices in class for academic activities under the supervision of the classroom teacher. Students may ask permission to utilize these learning tools in class and must have teacher permission prior to using the device.

When Does School Start?
The first day of school is Monday, August 25, 2014. School hours are 8:45 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. 

Where do I go on the first day of school?
6th graders report to the 6th grade hallway and wait to be dismissed to first period.
7th graders report to the 7th Grade hallway and wait to be dismissed to first period.
8th graders report to the cafeteria and wait to be dismissed to first period.

What do I do if I lost my schedule?
Go ahead and report to your designated area the first day of school.  We will provide you with a new schedule.

What if a period is missing on my schedule?
Contact one of our counselors at [email protected] or [email protected]. 

What if I want to change my schedule?
Schedule change requests will be based upon academic need and classroom space availability.  Schedule changes will not be made after the first two weeks of school, Friday, September 5, 2014.  Contact one of the counselors for more information.

When is lunch?
The lunch schedule is difficult to understand on the printed schedule, but basically what you need to know is that sixth graders eat at 11:30, seventh graders at 12:26, and eighth graders at 1:23 p.m.  We anticipate long lines in the cafeteria, especially at the beginning of the school year.  Therefore, we suggest you bring your lunch if possible.  You are welcome to deposit money into your lunch account whenever it is convenient.  When you make a purchase, you will enter your confidential student ID number.  Please make sure you do not share your number with anyone else.  Students are not allowed to charge meals in the cafeteria. 

Where is the bell schedule?
The schedule is included in this packet.

When can I get a locker?
Locker information will be on your schedule.  If there is a problem with your locker, Mrs. Coates will be available to help you at Meet the Teacher and during the first few days of school.  Please don’t stress if your locker doesn’t work.  I promise it will be ok!! 

Where do I go after school?
Bus riders exit through the cafeteria.  You need to memorize your bus number.  Car riders, walkers and bike riders exit through the front door.  Students who walk home after school need to leave immediately at 3:45 p.m. 

How do I know which bus to ride?
Please check the website to find out which bus your child is supposed to ride.  A representative from Durham will be at Meet the Teacher in order to explain bus routes and give bus assignments.  For additional bus information, please call Durham at 972-542-8316 or check the website. 

What else do I need to know?
Memorize your student ID before the first day of school.  Also, memorize your bus number and bring your schedule the first day of school.

“Pride Camp”

What is “Pride Camp”? This camp is offered to all incoming 6th graders.  During this time students will meet the administrators, teachers and staff.  They will tour the building and we will answer any concerns that students or parents might have.

9:15 a.m. Students will be dismissed for the tour of the building and to meet the teachers.

VEX "Swept Away 2" Robotics Competition was held on 5/30/2014.  

Seven Robotics Teams formed team alliance in a 2 vs. 2 competition and battled in a coordinated effort to score the most lofty goals, sweep the most soccer balls, and toss the most footballs over the opponent's field.  The Team allies with the least balls left on their court at end of each 2-minute match shared the same winning score.

Registration for 2014-15 School Year Families of returning students need to update their student’s information online through the Home Access Center (HAC) between August 4, and September 1, 2014. Before the registration period opens, you will receive an email containing your guardian HAC login id, only, and instructions on registering/updating student information. In order to best protect student confidential information, we will not include guardian passwords in the email notification, but you will be required to know your password to complete the online registration process. Please utilize the ‘Forgot My Username or Password’ link or contact ­­­­Deborah Baker at [email protected] to obtain your guardian HAC password. Once you have completed all of the update information, you will submit electronically. There are no forms to be printed & returned to the school. However, we will need your Proof of Residency sent with your child the first week of school.

Please print your child’s first and last name on the proof of residency document you submit. If you have more than one child at Dowell, please put each child’s name on the proof of residency. MISD accepts the following documents as proof of residency: current electric, water, or gas bill only. If you are unable to provide us with a copy to keep for our records, please stop in the office to have a copy made for you.

What is “Pride Camp”? This camp is offered to all incoming 6th graders.  During this time students will meet the administrators, teachers and staff.  They will tour the building and we will answer any concerns that students or parents might have.

Itinerary
9 - 9:15 a.m. Parents and students will meet in the cafeteria.
9:15 a.m. Students will be dismissed for the tour of the building and to meet the teachers.
Parents will remain in the cafeteria for a question and answer session.

Last Saturday our art students competed in Junior Visual Arts Scholastic Event alongside with art students from Plano, Frisco, Allen and other north region 10 schools. My 6th graders received 1 State level Silver medal, 7 Superior ratings and 4 Excellent rating. Feel free to congratulate these hard working art students.

Jr. VASE is an art event where students bring artwork and have to talk about their piece with a judge.  They are judged on their artwork and the interview.

Olivia Staszewski (6th grade) and Grace Kendall (7th grade) both received a Silver State Medal for their artwork.  Only 33 pieces were chosen out of 339 to get a Silver State Medal.

Dowell Art Teacher

Congratulations to the 8th grade GT ELAR mock trial team.  Through long hours of practice and hard work, they competed against 18 other teams from Collin county.  At the competition last Friday, Caroline Cox, Katherine Uribe, and Riley Milliken each  received a best lawyer award and Trevor Nguyen received 2 best lawyer awards. Both Ben Keener and Jadon Seall each received  2  best witness awards for a total of 9 awards going to Dowell.  Great job to everyone involved and hopefully  this experience will carry through to Mock Trial in high school or a career in law in the future.

Congratulations to the 6th grade Mixed Choir.  They competed at Sandy Lake on Friday and continued the tradition of receiving a 1st Division Superior rating . They sound great and the judges were impressed by how well they performed.

Hello Dowell 8th Grade Families,

My name is Jennifer Nichols and I am heading up the 8th grade farewell event this year. 

Our 8th grade farewell celebration will be held at the Stonebridge Beach Club on Friday, May 16th from 10:00am - 2:00pm.  We will dismiss around 9:30am for the 8th grade "walk" to the Dowell gym for their annual group photo.  We will walk as a group over to the beach club, and return to school as a group at 2pm.  Students will need to bring their own sack lunch for the day.  We will have a dessert social and slide show in the in the cafeteria after the students return to school.  We are hoping yearbooks will be in as well so they have some time to have them signed.  Will let you know as soon as we know more.  We will also have a DJ on site to provide music and he will have several activities for the kids including Karaoke, and sand volleyball will be available for those that would like to play volleyball.  I will be giving forms to the kids during their lunch on Monday, April 28th.  Please remember to bring sunscreen!

For the slide show, please send me 3-5 pictures from their years at Dowell.  Group shots of several kids would be great too, so if you have any photos you can share, please do.  You can email me, (please put 8th grade farewell in subject) or send a disk or jump drive with their name on it so I can return it to them.

As we near the end of this school year, please make sure that we have an updated email address for your student on file. Communication regarding the student registration update process for the 2014-15 school year will go out via e-mail during August, and you will not want to miss this information

If you know that you will be moving over the summer and your student will not be returning to Dowell Middle School or their currently zoned high school, please contact Deborah Baker in order to complete withdrawal paperwork during the week of May 27th-30th. This is paperwork that will make the transition process go more smoothly when you register your student at their new school.

If you are moving but your student will remain at Dowell Middle School, please make sure to bring in a new proof of residence (current Gas, Electric or Water Bill or copy of your lease) so that we have the most up to date contact information in our system for your student.

I wanted to let you know that most students from McKinney ISD have been assigned to the North Texas Recognition Ceremony site on Saturday, May 17.  There are two ceremonies that day, one at 10 in the morning and again in the afternoon at 2:30.  Out of your 168 testers, it appears that 62 qualified for ceremonies.  Congratulations!  Great percentage!  (You will be receiving the attached report in the mail soon.)

Both April 18 and May 23 will be used as school days to make up for the bad weather cancellations earlier this school year. All staff and students will be expected to attend. McKinney ISD has applied for a waiver from the State for the third day canceled due to inclement weather.

Enjoy some delicious Cajun cuisine and dine out for Dowell! On  Tuesday, April 8,  take part in Dinner for Dowell  at Razzoo's Cajun Cafe, 3270 S. Central Expressway.
